Skywalker Vineyards Pinot Noir is defined by two very separate locations, topographies and soil types. The lower block is located 235 feet above the valley floor on a ridge top facing south and westerly with slopes approaching thirty percent. The warmer of the two sites, it is critically important for Skywalker Vineyards Pinot Noir in very cool seasons (2010, 2011, 2012). The wines made from these grapes are powerful — additional ripeness adds texture to the base of the wine.
Stunning ruby and violet color, speaks to full maturity and a great site. Aromatics are extremely generous in 2012, warm spice, dark fruits of cherry and raspberry, and an attack of supremely dense and sweet fruits followed by a hedonistic, saturated finish that is both lasting and delicate. Cellared in pristine conditions, the 2012 Skywalker Pinot Noir will last a decade or more.
The 2012 vintage introduces our Sommità Pinot Noir. Visually, the 2012 Sommità Pinot Noir offers deep ruby color with a waning purple edge telltale of ripe, but not over-ripe, Pinot Noir from a cool location. Highly aromatic with clove, warm forest berries like raspberries and blueberries, leading towards a spicy and red fruit center. Texturally coating and lavish on the palate, but remains firm with bright Marin County acidity on the finish. Primary upon release and will develop added layers and complexity with bottle aging.
Cellared in ideal environment that allowed for the wine to be bottled without any fining or filtration. The harvest season of 2012 will be remembered for its cloudless skies and mild temperatures. Considered a classic vintage with respect to all varieties on the estate, the Pinot Noir and Chardonnay reached ideal ripeness without threat of rain or damaging conditions. The Pinot Noir harvest was in late September.
The 2013 Skywalker Pinot Noir starts with a saturated, deep ruby color suggesting a ripe vintage for Marin County. The aromas are classic Skywalker: dried rose petals, potpourri, cranberry and allspice, but with an undertone of crushed earth and mineral. The palate expands in waves, starting focused and taut, expanding with time into flavors of spice, wild berry, dried flowers and red fruits. The finish is long and light on the palate, a telltale sign of an age worthy Pinot Noir.
The harvest season of 2013 will be remembered for its gentle temperament of bountiful blue skies and mild temperatures. We now know that we were experiencing the second year of extremely dry conditions in Northern California. Considered a classic vintage with respect to all varieties on the estate, the Pinot Noir reached ideal ripeness without threat of rain or damaging conditions, harvesting in late September.
